Marzocco di Poppiano Wines

Marzocco di Poppiano is a family-owned winery located in the beautiful area of the Chianti Colli Fiorentini wine region. The winery is on the top of Poppiano hill (300 meters above sea level), near the old castle (property of the famous Guicciardini family since XII century) and is owned by Roberta Chini and her husband Maurizio Mazzantini. The property has been in Roberta’s family since 1870 but the grapes grown had been sold to other wineries until 2015 when they started to harvest the best vineyard plots for themselves and decided to follow a dream and put inside each bottle a bit of their soul and winemaking experience. They are fortunate because they can count on very old vines (some of them planted in the 50’s) that are growing in a wonderful soil (made by sand, clay, shingle and the Tuscan “pietra serena”). Their philosophy is to create wines that smell and taste of Tuscany, with an emphasis strictly linked to the soul of the Poppiano hill. A great majority of the wines are produced from vines that are more than 60 years old.

The Lion with the red lily shield is a historical symbol of Roberta’s family (the count Guicciardini Corsi Salviati) and it represents the power and prestige of Florence’s nobilty.

The entire production is about 20.000 bottles per year, with different production per hectare.

Chianti DOCG 2015

This is the entry level wine of Marzocco di Poppiano, a nice and very well-made Chianti DOCG. Lively and exuberant, with violet and fresh cherry perfumes. 2015 was an excellent year in this region and the wine shows the power of this vintage. The flavor is intense and full of aromatic notes that remind us of fresh red fruits, with medium tannins and is perfect to drink while eating a flavorful T-bone steak or with a simple pasta first course.

Chianti Riserva DOCG 2016

The 2016 Chianti Riserva has been aged longer inside the big Grabellotto barrels. It is deeper and more elegant than the entry level Chianti and shows the finesse and elegance of the 2016 vintage in Tuscany. Complex and well balanced between red fruits, rose flowers, and gentle spicy notes. In the mouth the wine is vibrant, fresh, and very drinkable with a nice blackberry aftertaste.  This wine will age beautifully for 5-10 years but can be enjoyed today as well. Pair it with aged cheeses and roasted or grilled meats.

Pretale IGT 2015

Pretale is an aristocratic single vineyard wine, made by blending together Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from one of the oldest vineyards on the Estate. On the nose it hints of blueberries and blackberries, completed by spicy clove notes, and light toasted oak aromas. In the mouth the wine is sleek and velvety, with perfectly integrated tannins and a long mineral aftertaste. Wonderful to drink by itself or incredible if paired with some good Pecorino cheese.

Their wines has been requested by Gambero Rosso, Slow Wine, Vitae and Luca Maroni wine guides to be included inside the new 2020 guides release.

The first guide that has been released is the Annuario dei Migliori vini Italiani 2020 by Luca Maroni.
